CALL FOR ENTRY
The Design Exchange, Junior Achievement, and the Canadian Business Hall of Fame, are proud to announce a call for entry to Canadian post-secondary students studying design and/or fine arts. Students will submit for a chance to be selected to fly to Toronto and participate in a design charrette on February 17th, 2010, that will result in a new Order of the Business Hall of Fame award. This award will be unveiled and presented to Inductees on May 11, 2010 at the Gala Dinner Induction Ceremony and each year as long as the Hall of Fame continues to honour outstanding life achievements in business.

About the Induction Ceremonies
Every year over 1,200 senior business leaders from across Canada gather for an evening of networking, fine dining and entertainment. Visionary sponsors, distinguished Inductees and guests will join together in a celebration of business in Canada. This is the premier annual gathering of business and community figures from across the country and within every sector. The Gala showcases the potential of everything that Canadian business and leaders of industry can offer to our citizens, our nation and the world.

Charrette Description
The February 17th, 2010, design charrette, will take place on the historic Toronto Stock Exchange Trading Floor, with teams challenged to re-imagine the Order of the Business Hall of Fame award. The award should represent everything that this prestigious award program stands for, be replicable, timeless in design and become widely recognizable as a symbol of the highest achievement in Canadian business.

Selected post-secondary students will be flown to Toronto, where they will stay for two nights, with the charrette occurring on the 17th of February. Teams will be created from the chosen students, local business professionals, and members of the design community.

Each team will spend the day working through design exercises that will result in final models of the Order of the Business Hall of Fame award.

At the end of the day, a selection panel representing the Canadian Business Hall of Fame will select the design that best exemplifies the essence of Companion honours and will announce the winning team before all of the day’s attendees, as well as media and other invited guests.

The Design Exchange, Junior Achievement and The Canadian Business Hall of Fame, will then work with the winning team to refine the award before putting it into production in time for the Gala Dinner and Induction ceremony on May 11, 2010.

How to Enter
Currently enrolled, Canadian post-secondary students studying design across all disciplines and/or fine arts, are asked to submit the following to be considered for participation in the February 17th, 2010 design charrette in Toronto:

1. A completed entry form, available for download here
2. One letter of reference from a current professor
3. Three examples of current work, in eps or jpeg format, complied on a labeled CD
4. A one-page letter stating why you would like to participate in this design charrette

ANNOUNCED: 2009 DESIGN EXCHANGE AWARD WINNERS

TORONTO, ONTARIO: The Design Exchange (DX) announces the 2009 winners of the Design Exchange Awards. This national design competition is open to professional designers across Canada working in a range of disciplines. The awards were presented at a gala dinner at the DX on November 24th, 2009. The winners are displayed in an Exhibition at the DX running from November 25, 2009 – February 21, 2010.

The Design Exchange Awards promote Canadian design excellence and recognizes the critical role of design in all types of organizations – national & international. The Awards celebrate the success stories achieved through close partnerships between clients and designers. Projects are recognized for balancing function, aesthetics, and economic success.

Award catagories include architecture, interiors, visual communications, environments, fashion and industrial design. A special award is also presented to the CEO with the best design strategy. The winners in each category are listed below.

The Architecture and Community Design Initiative is an innovative partnership project led by archiTEXT, the East Scarborough Storefront and supported by the Design Exchange and the City of Toronto. Its focus is on poverty reduction by enabling young people in one of Toronto’s thirteen priority neighborhoods to not only conceptualize, but design, draw and steward the creation of a community resource building. The mission is a legacy project, designed to articulate a national precedent and model for participatory design, creativity, and innovation in architecture through the engagement and empowerment of the community.

The Design Exchange is excited to host the Architecture and Community Design Initiative charrette, where twenty-five young people from the Kingston Galloway neighbourhood have been selected to join architects, urban planners, artists and architecture students from the University of Toronto in a creative environment designed to inspire. Those chosen will be given the opportunity to design a space on the current site of the East Scarborough Storefront, one of which will be chosen to take into the next phase of conceptualization.

Founded in 2006, archiTEXT is a think tank focused on architecture and innovation. As the current Innovators in Residence at the Design Exchange, archiTEXT explores the intersection of architecture with all facets of our lives using creative mechanisms including: Rapid Idea Generation charrettes, contemporary art and 3-D sketching. Using these creative mechanisms as vehicles, the objective is to create implementable and tangible outcomes, which include education, public policy, publications and film.
The East Scarborough storefront is a partnership of community members and service agencies working together to create a thriving community. The storefront was created in 2001 to address some of the most pressing needs in this community. People of all ages, cultures and abilities access the Storefront on a daily basis. Services provided include: employment assistance, legal advice, settlement services, youth groups, art programs, mental health and addictions counseling, parenting programs, and health services.

Parallel Nippon: Contemporary Japanese Architecture 1996 – 2006

TORONTO, ONTARIO: The Design Exchange is proud to announce Parallel Nippon: Contemporary Japanese Architecture 1996 – 2006. Parallel Nippon focuses on 110 representative architectural specimens selected from among buildings constructed primarily in Japan in the 10 years from 1996 to 2006, presenting them against the backdrop of Japan’s socio-cultural environment.

The exhibit retraces how Japan’s architectural scene has answered with fine-tuned designs to the demands of the age amid the transition from the period of the Japanese speculative “bubble” economy to the post-bubble period. Parallel Nippon is built around the idea of contrast: expanding metropolises versus local communities plagued by declining birthrates, grand cultural facilities with an international focus versus small but sensitive community facilities for local children or for the local elderly, and so forth. Parallel Nippon is co-organized by the Architectural Institute of Japan and The Japan
Foundation.
