_____-micro-research announces the launch of a mobile research
laboratory devoted to the use of free software and open hardware
within the field of psychogeophysics. Field trips, working groups and
occassional workshops are planned for 2010.

The first expedition will be titled Topology of a Future City and
takes place in early February in Berlin as part of Transmediale10.

Topology of a future city proposes a speculative working group
divining, describing and thus constructing a future city in ruins; a
series of descriptive urban vectors extrapolated from ghosted
electromagnetic, signal and literary traces.

Borrowing techniques from geophysical archaeology (revealing and
mapping of geophysical properties), narrative displacements (filmic
manipulations of temporality, science fiction), and coded
psychogeographics (tracing signs of underground networks), Topology
sketches a model for the future city flaneur.

The last in a series of regular workshops at _____-micro_research
. In 2010 we will initiate an interdisciplinary mobile
research laboratory devoted to the use of free software and open
hardware within the field of psychogeophysics. Field trips, working
groups and occassional workshops are planned. To celebrate this
transition a small party will be held on the 28th (8PM+) - all old and
new researchers are invited. Drinks will be served.

//November 28th 2PM: Irrational Computing with Ralf Baecker

Irrational Computing is a loose collection of ideas that includes
non-traditional logic gates, non-applied computing, minimal computing,
DIY transistors and homebrew CPUs.

During the workshop we will build elementary arithmetic and logic
units that enable us to realise expandable, networked and looped
digital circuits with complex behaviour. We will feed our circuits
with binary patterns and explore their visual and auditive responses.
The major component of this workshop is the transistor and its
switching capability. In addition the workshop will give an
introduction and guidance into building handcrafted macroscopic
mechanical logic gates. Feel free to bring some potential material
(old toys, junk, springs, levers etc.) for logic investigations.

Ralf Baecker (1977) lives and works in Bremen, Germany. After studies
in computer science he attended the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne.
In 2007/2008 he taught at the department for "Design of Medial
Environments" at the Bauhaus University in Weimar. Baecker builds
kinetic installations and sculptures which interlink symbolic and
physical spaces. His epistemological machines explore our imagination
of digital processes.

'Accompanying arrangements at rail replacement bus service’ is a sound
installation performed by a robot named ‘Hyper Line Tracer’. In
residency at _____-micro-research we'll be exploring an acousthesia
upgrade to expose the robot into a feedback actuated orbit: The robot
is carrying a radio transmitter and a microphone on its back and is
surrounded by various radios, receiving the signal emitted from the
robot. As the microphone is transmitting the signals coming from the
radio speakers back to the radio receivers, feedback noise is
generated. Hence by passing the series of radios, with their different
positions & characteristics a composition of feedback noise
emerges. With the applied sensitivity to sound the robot is guided by
the noise created upon its own movements. In the end the robot
generates and moves within its own labyrinth of noises and feedback
tones.

For the salon various 'Accompanying Arrangements' will be performed
and examined. With drinks and conversation. Free. RSVP.

In this workshop we will try to go beyond the general notion of
democratic media as a matter of access and instead re-examine the
concept by itself. When broken apart, it raises questions around
systems of organization and means of control. The workshop is on one
side a conceptual framework for the discussion and exploration of
participatory media production and the relation between code, content
and execution, but also a 'hands-on' introduction to simple
commandline video editing. We will develop TV programmes - small
scripts that executes video content in different ways.

At the end of the day we will turn the space into a pirate TV channel
and make a collective transmission out of our TV programming efforts.

Please bring video material and computer.

In 1932 Bertolt Brecht formulated a critique of the radio as a
centralized mass media, and advocated a decentralized media structure
with as many senders as receivers. Ever since, the general notion of
democratic media has been, and still is, identical to people getting
access to transmitting their own content. From independent grassroot
TV makers to pirate radio stations or online digital platforms, the
aim has been to create a perfect, democratic media structure by
granting people access to the technology. Today though, with a media
landscape made up of corporate internet service providers, Brecht's
visions seem to have been fulfilled. However, paradoxically enough, by
venture entrepreneurs capitalizing on so called architectures of
participation.

During the workshop we will explore the contents of found hard-disks
(hard-disque trouvé). Using methods borrowed from computer digital
forensics participants will peek into the lives of others - former
owners of scavenged hardware. Hard-disks as the most intimate part of
any computer system. In case of a personal computer - the most
intimate part of person's life. Deductively, we will try to discuss
and recreate 'psyche' portraits of those strangers and restore the
time-lines that otherwise would have faded away. In the times of
paranoiac privacy awareness we forget that online is not the only
place to loose your identity. Although more and more personal data is
stored on the Internet servers it is still written to
hard-disks. There were several reports about Internet server's
hard-disks ending up on flea-markets, being sold for little money.

By the end of the workshop all the hard-disks and/or the data will be
destroyed!

* Workshop prerequisites:

All participants are asked to go local flea-markets or second-hand
shops to pick up few old hard-disks. You may try eBay as well. Older =
better, those disks don't need to be of large capacity, in fact 8-16
Gigabytes is the best size to be able to analyze it during one-day
session. They also don't need to have any operating system. Make sure
the disks are 3.5” and have standard IDE interface.

Everybody is also expected to bring laptops (PC, Intel Macs) capable
of booting from USB-sticks or CDs and equipped with USB2.0
interfaces. GNU/Linux command line knowledge will be advantageous,
however it is not required.

Æther9, an experiment in collaborative realtime storytelling is gathering souls in a dramatically online fashion.

BERLIN will host a physical reunion, a séance, workshop, conspiracy,
residency, and eventually a performance.

During their one-week residency at _____-micro research , the
networked Æther9 members will meet in physical space for the first
time to redefine the evolution of the project, develop technical
applications, and re-experiment with new ideas which will explore the
scenographic potential of the medium. The foundations being
distributed authorship, cross-platform, and 'remote’ performance of
streaming audio and visual material to a nomadic HTML interface. This
event of live performances and video streams from vast locations will
take you to ‘the unexpected’ - a hyperdrive through space and
inter-zones.

At the heart of the Æther9 project is the desire to fulfill the "old"
utopian dream of borderless communication. No frontiers. Developed by
an online networked group of international visual artists/collectives
working through Oceania, Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and into the
Americas, Æther9 is a matrix for video/audio performance, and
collaborative hybrids of post-dramatic processes particular to these
new modes of digital communication. Using both “new“ and “low-tech“
technologies within multi-disciplinary art practices, Æther9 aims to
break the boundaries of spatial and cultural distances to democratize
the artistic voice within communication technology. The term of
“reality-jamming” catches the effect generated through this wildly
dispersed yet intimate collaboration of live sounds and images whose
fragmented glimpses of individual philosophical positions and
immediate surroundings transition across the global network in one
cross-planetary embrace.

NOISE_PRODUCE: Concerned with techniques for the elaboration of
experimental signal generation; mis-use of digital electronics for the
active examination of noise and materiality within the context of
industrial electronics, engineering, economy and the event or
situation.

MAKE YOUR OWN NEURAL NETWORK: This one day workshop is the final part
of a series of open experiments and workshops. It materialises all six
previous in the creation of a simple autonomous stable/astable
CMOS-noise synthesizer unit with a specially expandable neural design
model.

DIY: ELECTRONIC KNOW HOW IS NOT REQUIRED. Expansive speculation, also
continuous confusion is welcome as starting point. Includes all
diagrams and schematics, specially developed circuit boards,
electronic parts and pieces. All tools are supplied. Electronics
construction skills [including soldering, debugging, repairs, own
experiments] will be assisted.

Karsten Gebbert (DE/US) is an '''un'''trained musician, recording artist
and software developer with a passion for the realm of the unexplored
corners of ones own mind and the challenges those frequently produce. He
has been making music in various formations since 1996 - now he is part
of the GOTO10 collective and also plays with a nameless (but awesome)
Berlin band project. His newest favourite project is building a FLOSS
recording studio together with his comrades from the band.

This new performance is an attempt to mix a few divergent practices in
sound creation and manipulation in order to explore the vast space of
possible modulations between the organized, structured and quantized
space of music and the fluidity of sound scapes from chaotic sound
generators, recorded material and more conventional synthesis. The
results are spectrally rich (or poor) sound-scapes, rotten, aliasing wav
files of walks through parks and streets as well as deep sinusoidal
bass-lines and beats influenced heavily by instrumental rap music. All
his music is realised in the SuperCollider 3 environment.

=== Adrian Vacca - "Why Is It?" part 1-2-9 ===

Jan-Kees van Kampen(NL) is a software enthusiast, who spends some of his
time doing sound programming and composition with SuperCollider, and
additionally works as teacher, technician and farmer. He is part of the
GOTO10 collective, PBUP (a network music band) and the Schreck Ensemble
for electro-acoustic music.

"Why Is It?" is a series of thematic sound pieces that was started in
2000. Adrian Vacca will play pt.1 and 2 and the new pt.9: " Why Is It we
don't move to the other, walk in circles, gobble the fodder ?".
Improvising with typical stage artefacts like hum, ground loop, and
known examples of vocal virtuosity from down under.

A generative set of rhythmic simplicity, pop ambience and happy noise,
exploring harmonicity in a nonharmonic context.

=== Aymeric Mansoux - "4NX" ===

Aymeric Mansoux is a founding member of the GOTO10 collective. His main
artistic and research interests revolve around online communities, open
and distributed practices, software as a medium and the influence of
FLOSS in the development and understanding of software art. He currently
lives in the Netherlands and teaches at the Networked Media Master of
the Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam.

'''4NX''' is an audiovisual noise sculpture, starting with the panic of
a flat signal, turning it into image then back into sound, the
bootstrapping of a stochastic noise generator, the search for structure
and frozen moments of accidental beauty. A cornucopia of clicks, pops
and glitches. 4NX is violent but draws you into this world of chaos
through its black and white aesthetics, melancholic atmosphere and
unexpected shaping of raw noise into hypnotic patterns. 4NX is an
ongoing research on noise aesthetics.

** October 16/17th 2PM/12PM: /mode +v noise with GOTO10

“/mode +v noise” is a project of GOTO10, a collective of international
artists and computer programmers. It is based on IRC, the oldest
text-based Internet chat environment. This intervention will transform
an IRC chat room/channel into a simple, collaborative, text-based online
system for making music. Since IRC allows ‘chat bots’- computer programs
that pretend to be human conversation partners -, we will program such a
bot to create a collective musical composition environment based on
Internet chats. In this workshop, participants will explore two parts of
the project: designing sound generators in Supercollider that they can
control via a simple IRC bot written in Python. Workshop is taught by
Aymeric Mansoux and Jan-Kees van Kampen from GOTO10.

PREREQUISITES: This workshop is aimed to beginners, no previous
knowledge is required but a basic understanding of computers and an
unconditional love for command line and text based interfaces is
mandatory!

To bring:
* bring your own Laptop (PC based, macbook/mactel, recent imac, etc. We
can't provide support for PPC based Mac such as the old G3-4-5-...)
* bring your own headphones

experiment, using the Puredyne GNU/Linux live distro.
* 15:00 - 17:00: Intro to Supercollider's project botsynth, how to
change patterns and synths, explanation of different hardcoded
synthdef (from super simple, to more complicated examples).
* 17:00 - 17:30: break
* 17:30 - 19:50: make your own synth + play it through chat using local
default bot
* 19:50 - 20:00: vote for the best synthdef and win a pack of
stropwaffel

* 12:00 - 13:00: python crash course
* 13:00 - 15:00: reviewing the IRC bot features including OSC, IRC and
mode+v classes
* 15:00 - 15:30: break
* 15:30 - 17:50: pimp your bot by combining existing code or writting
your own
* 17:50 - 18:00: vote for the best bot and win a pack of stropwaffel

=== About Supercollider ===

SuperCollider is an environment and programming language originally
released in 1996 by James McCartney for real time audio synthesis and
algorithmic composition. Since then it has been evolving into a system
used and further developed by both scientists and artists working with
sound. It is an efficient and expressive dynamic programming language
which makes it an interesting framework for acoustic research,
algorithmic music and interactive programming. We will deal with
practical sound-synthesis, jitlib (rapid prototyping), and get ourselves
sounding ready for the irc-jam on the second day.

Python is a general-purpose high-level programming language. Its design
philosophy emphasizes code readability. Python claims to "
remarkable power with very clear syntax", and its standard library is
large and comprehensive.
