Further information: &#60;a href=&#34;http://anart.no/projects/data_forensics&#34;&#62;http://anart.no/projects/data_forensics&#60;/a&#62;&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
//&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
With an emphasis on the active construction of hardware and software&#60;br /&#62;
apparatus, the Data forensics workshop will apply practical tools,&#60;br /&#62;
techniques and theory to analyse intentional data emissions within&#60;br /&#62;
the city of Oslo.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
The workshop extends a succession of practical and theoretical&#60;br /&#62;
investigations concerned with electromagnetic  phenomena into the&#60;br /&#62;
world of data space. Spanning signal and noise, digits and decay, Data&#60;br /&#62;
Forensics explores the often unintuitive reality that digital data has&#60;br /&#62;
its own electromagnetic (physical) presence, a physicality that can be&#60;br /&#62;
read and perhaps even modulated through the carrier medium itself.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Data Forensics presents a window between the domain of the digital and&#60;br /&#62;
the physical; the digital both informs and reveals the physical and&#60;br /&#62;
vice versa. It is through this relationship that we can find a&#60;br /&#62;
fortuitous exchange of practices. We can - for example - borrow&#60;br /&#62;
techniques from real-world forensics to examine and attempt to make&#60;br /&#62;
sense of leaked data emissions. Alternatively, we can expose and&#60;br /&#62;
elaborate upon the notion of data sedimentation; taking an&#60;br /&#62;
archaeological approach to examining everyday digital activity.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Topics for active research and discussion within an artistic context&#60;br /&#62;
include but are not limited to:&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
making sense of landscape from a forensics perspective, photo and&#60;br /&#62;
audio reconnaissance, data sedimentation, data visualisation,&#60;br /&#62;
TEMPEST, cryptography, mapping of event intensity using GPS,&#60;br /&#62;
signals, noise and strategies for interpretation of the&#60;br /&#62;
intentionality of transmissions&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Participants do not need to have practical or theoretical experience&#60;br /&#62;
within these multiple fields; a keen interest in this novel artistic&#60;br /&#62;
terrain is essential.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Participation is 500 NOK&#60;br /&#62;

		 <title>xxxxx workshop 53: alternative control (other approaches to []-duino)</title>
		 <link>http://freshsent.telekommunisten.net/mail.cgi/archive/xxxxx/20080721183808/</link>
		 <description>&#60;p&#62;&#60;br /&#62;
A (more-or-less) weekly series of constructivist workshops emphasising&#60;br /&#62;
making and connection within the field of the existent.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Calendar:&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
26 July: alternative control (other approaches to []-duino)&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
9 August: video synthesis with Brian Mckenna &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
29-31 August: You've got Pluggability. Pure Data in the Summer [registration still open]&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Forthcoming matter:&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Kirlian photography, data forensics, scrying boards, KiCad&#60;br /&#62;
PCB design&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
... contact if you're interested in leading a related workshop.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
//&#38;lt;-----------------------------------------------&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
26 July 2PM: alternative control (other approaches to []-duino)&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
This informal workshop/working group examines both clear alternatives&#60;br /&#62;
to the ubiquitous []-duino hardware and programming environment [HID,&#60;br /&#62;
custom USB protocols, programming AVR microcontrollers] and other ways&#60;br /&#62;
of working with the []-duino software [avr-gcc, Makefiles]. In the&#60;br /&#62;
interests of diversity, the workshop attempts to sketch simple, low&#60;br /&#62;
budget methods for working with embedded and environmental computing,&#60;br /&#62;
sensor input and control. No prior experience is required. A working&#60;br /&#62;
GNU/Linux install is preferred.&#60;br /&#62;

		 <description>&#60;p&#62;&#60;br /&#62;
You've got pluggability. Pure Data in the summer.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
29-31 August, 2008&#60;br /&#62;
xxxxx/pickledfeet, Berlin&#60;br /&#62;
Cost: 60 EUR (with HID sensor board), 50 EUR (without)&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Pure Data (Pd) presents the ultimate, free software environment for&#60;br /&#62;
sheer audio, video and hardware pluggability, patching and piping. Pd&#60;br /&#62;
provides the basis for all manner of audiovisual performance and&#60;br /&#62;
trans-media installation, as well as satisfying the artistic quest for&#60;br /&#62;
heady experimentation and improvisation. Yet few artists take the time&#60;br /&#62;
to master a solid foundation in this graphical programming&#60;br /&#62;
environment.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
The three day You've got pluggability workshop aims to provide a firm&#60;br /&#62;
grounding and clear overview of the varied possibilities and paths&#60;br /&#62;
offered by Pure Data. The first day will introduce Pd and quickly move&#60;br /&#62;
on to how to create patches which create sounds and noises. The second&#60;br /&#62;
day will look further at sound, particularly how to work with sampled&#60;br /&#62;
audio, and will introduce the GEM library for working with live and&#60;br /&#62;
recorded video. The third day will start with a look at the HID (Human&#60;br /&#62;
Interface Device) system for getting sensor input into Pd, and venture&#60;br /&#62;
into to using this input to control the audio and video patches which&#60;br /&#62;
the participants have already created. No previous experience is&#60;br /&#62;
necessary to take this workshop.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
This PD workshop will be roughly based on the Pure Data FLOSS Manual,&#60;br /&#62;
written by Derek Holzer, Luka Princic, Adam Hyde and contributors from&#60;br /&#62;
the PD community: &#60;a href=&#34;http://flossmanuals.net/puredata&#34;&#62;http://flossmanuals.net/puredata&#60;/a&#62;&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Participants should bring their own laptop running GNU/Linux, Mac OS X or&#60;br /&#62;
Windows, and with Pure Data Extended installed from:&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;a href=&#34;http://puredata.info/downloads&#34;&#62;http://puredata.info/downloads&#60;/a&#62;&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
They are also encouraged to bring their own ideas, sensors, USB game&#60;br /&#62;
controllers, MIDI devices, microphones and video cameras. There will&#60;br /&#62;
be an opportunity to buy the inexpensive xxxxx-HID sensor input board&#60;br /&#62;
produced at Pickled Feet: &#60;a href=&#34;http://1010.co.uk/avrhid.html&#34;&#62;http://1010.co.uk/avrhid.html&#60;/a&#62;&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Limited places! Please register before 24 August at: &#60;a href=&#34;mailto:&#38;#109;&#38;#64;&#38;#x31;&#38;#x30;&#38;#x31;&#38;#48;&#38;#x2E;&#38;#x63;&#38;#111;&#38;#x2E;&#38;#x75;&#38;#x6B;&#34;&#62;&#38;#109;&#38;#64;&#38;#x31;&#38;#x30;&#38;#x31;&#38;#48;&#38;#x2E;&#38;#x63;&#38;#111;&#38;#x2E;&#38;#x75;&#38;#x6B;&#60;/a&#62;&#60;br /&#62;

---About the Teachers&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Derek Holzer [USA 1972] began working with Pure Data in 2001. Since&#60;br /&#62;
then, he has taught and performed with the program across Europe,&#60;br /&#62;
North America, Brazil and New Zealand. His work focuses on field&#60;br /&#62;
recording, networked collaboration strategies, experiments in&#60;br /&#62;
improvisational sound and the use of free software such as Pd. He is&#60;br /&#62;
currently writing a beginner's manual for Pure&#60;br /&#62;
Data. &#60;a href=&#34;http://www.umatic.nl/info_derek.html&#34;&#62;http://www.umatic.nl/info_derek.html&#60;/a&#62;&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Martin Howse operates within the fields of discourse, speculative&#60;br /&#62;
hardware (environmental data in open physical systems), code (an&#60;br /&#62;
examination of layers of abstraction), free software and the&#60;br /&#62;
situational (performances and interventions). &#60;a href=&#34;http://1010.co.uk&#34;&#62;http://1010.co.uk&#60;/a&#62;&#60;br /&#62;

&#60;br /&#62;
July 7th 2PM: EVP/ITC and many worlds [part two]&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Electronic voice phenomena (EVP) and Instrumental transcommunication&#60;br /&#62;
(ITC) refer to techniques concerned with the breakthrough (after&#60;br /&#62;
Konstantin Raudive) of many/other worlds. The first EVP/ITC and many worlds&#60;br /&#62;
workshop explored related techniques which elaborate questions of&#60;br /&#62;
noise, transmission and reception aside from both intentionality and&#60;br /&#62;
concealment. A clear line can be traced from the endophysical work of&#60;br /&#62;
Hugh Everett III (many worlds interpretation of quantum physics) to&#60;br /&#62;
ITC technique (the haunted interface).&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
This second workshop will examine recordings made in the last&#60;br /&#62;
workshop, techniques for photographic and image-based ITC, and audio&#60;br /&#62;
granulation/cutup using custom hardware and software.&#60;br /&#62;

June 21st 2PM: EVP/ITC and many worlds&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Electronic voice phenomena (EVP) and Instrumental transcommunication&#60;br /&#62;
(ITC) refer to techniques concerned with the breakthrough (after&#60;br /&#62;
Konstantin Raudive) of many/other worlds. The EVP/ITC and many worlds&#60;br /&#62;
workshop will explore related techniques which elaborate questions of&#60;br /&#62;
noise, transmission and reception aside from both intentionality and&#60;br /&#62;
concealment. A clear line can be traced from the endophysical work of&#60;br /&#62;
Hugh Everett III (many worlds interpretation of quantum physics) to&#60;br /&#62;
ITC technique (the haunted interface). The workshop will actively&#60;br /&#62;
explore recording centred techniques and apparatus for white noise&#60;br /&#62;
broadcast and audio granulation/cutup using custom hardware and&#60;br /&#62;
software.&#60;br /&#62;

&#60;br /&#62;
A practical introduction to the free software GStreamer multimedia&#60;br /&#62;
framework, a highly pluggable cross-platform media architecture&#60;br /&#62;
allowing for the ready construction of audio and video&#60;br /&#62;
pipelines. Using either CLI or simple Python scripts diverse formats&#60;br /&#62;
and codecs can be converted or combined, with additional effects&#60;br /&#62;
applied. The xxxxx-HID will also be used to provide control of live&#60;br /&#62;
audio and video mixing, and effects.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;

May 24th 2PM: Compact synth and noise//circuit building with Tom Bugs&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Build yourself a circuit-board-synth offering chaos noises,&#60;br /&#62;
sync'n'drone-tones, body-contact-wobble and juice-starvation - a&#60;br /&#62;
portable sonic system for you to take away at the end of the day.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Tom Bugs of BugBrand has designed a special new circuit to introduce&#60;br /&#62;
you to a range of useful lo-fi circuitry ideas (including simple&#60;br /&#62;
oscillators, mixers, distortion and power amp) combined with&#60;br /&#62;
circuit-bend techniques (body-contacts and power starvation) - learn&#60;br /&#62;
some electronic chops, build the little circuit, make some noises and&#60;br /&#62;
go home with the fruits of your labour.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
All parts supplied!&#60;br /&#62;
